Here is another longer post I put together for my other blog, Entrepreneur Solo. The Battle for Spanish Society talks about how Spain faces the problem from a brain drain, a lack of leadership and a huge loss of confidence. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I wrote this article while editorialising for my new magazine, Spain is Different. However it needed to be expanded upon and explained fully and the obvious place to place it wasn’t apparent. In the end I decided that here was as good a place as any, a blog about being an entrepreneur in Spain.

So here we go, enjoy and comment.

Spain is at a crossroads, a place where the next moves forward could determine a lot of future outcomes for better or worse. Spain is in a fully blown crisis both of the economy and also of confidence. Spain needs change and that change cannot come too soon.

However Spain also has good raw materials. When you have good raw materials you just have to to put them together well into something that is worth it. Spain has those raw materials in my opinion but can it mix them together well, I am not too sure of that.

Let’s look at something that may help you to understand the last point in the article. If something is approached in the right way there is usually a good outcome.

If you give everyone the ingredients and the instructions to bake a cake it is likely that you will get ten very different tasting, and looking, cakes. Some will be good, some bad and some, mine included probably, very indifferent, or possibly burnt.

If you bring ten different people to Spain they will have ten different viewpoints and ten different experiences. Their reaction to Spain will depend on their cultural background, their education level, their likes and dislikes and even how they felt on that day. Six may enjoy it, a couple may think “meh” and a couple may hate it. It all depends on what they are presented with really and whether that suits their personality and tastes. However if Spain presents the right raw materials to the right people in the right way then there is really no reason not to enjoy it. However there is, in the end, no accounting for tastes.

Paddle4Heroes, from Gibraltar to Marbella by kayak

PADDLE4HEROES, RAISING MONEY THROUGH KAYAKING - FOR HELP FOR HEROES AND FAMILIES OF THE FALLEN

On the 31^st May this year, nine men from Paddle4Heroes are going to paddle from Gibraltar to Marbella in Spain by kayak to raise funds for Help for Heroes and a new charity called Families of The Fallen. Both of these charities should touch the heart of anyone British, as they are at the forefront of helping servicemen and women recover from the trauma of war.

Of the nine paddlers (aged between 20 – 58!), six are ex-servicemen (including one from my own regiment) and all live on the Costa del Sol. Several have experienced active service and all know the devastation that war can bring to everyone involved.

Indeed, the consequences of active service can be long lasting, not just for servicemen and women but also for their immediate families. Both parties often need significant help readjusting to normal life (whether the trauma is psychological or physical) and that is where charities like Help for Heroes and Families of The Fallen come into their own.

Needless to say, Britain seems to have been continually at war for years now, with the Iraq wars and Afghanistan being notable. However, our military forces also continually operate in many other areas including often as unsung UN peacekeepers, which can often involve significant risks – and injury.

TRAINING, TRAINING AND...MORE TRAINING!

In fact, whilst deaths in battle always make the news, injuries rarely do and they, of course, far outnumber deaths, despite often being utterly life changing for those hurt. Indeed, I hate to think how many British servicemen and women have sustained terrible injuries over the past twenty years – with their injuries never having made the news or having been ‘hidden’ deep within governmental statistics. Certainly, many more servicemen and women (and their families) need help than most of us realise…

Needless to say, the point of the canoe trip by Paddle4Heroes from Gibraltar to Marbella (90 km) on the 31^st May is to raise funds for Help for Heroes and Families of the Fallen. It is your money that keeps these charities going and your money that directly helps our servicemen and women in their time of greatest need.

So, please make an effort to spare some money for Paddle4Heroes. What they are doing deserves your support and it would be great to think that any of you Britons, with any connection at all to Spain, could help to make the Paddle4Heroes event an outstanding fund raising success – that does justice to any Briton living or holidaying in Spain!

Pierre writes a blog about Moving to Madrid. What he says in this post is very true. The majority of property in the big cities is not up to renting standard. Also you must be careful of the stipulations in the contracts so that the landlord is responsible for general upkeep and you for damages if you break something.

Madrid is a great place to live, mainly because it is a capital city with all you need, and with the quality of life you do not have in London or Paris: no pressure, no insecurity, you can eat out for as much as 10 €, people are open and talkative.

However, you have to know that the typical Madrid flat does not comply with the expectations 90% of newly arrived expats.

Plainly put, the average quality of real estate in Madrid (and in other main Spanish cities) is significantly below the average quality in other big cities, and especially the USA.

This means that even with the crisis, there is more demand than offer for quality, premium or luxury flats a bit like the photo at the start of this post.

At any time, you will only have handful of real luxury flats available in Madrid, which you have to know where to find and how to book. If they let you book months in advance, because usually the companies managing these flats just accept booking a month before the entry date.

Spanish corruption clamp down to impact agent sales

I am getting quite a lot of press coverage at the moment and again yesterday was featured, this time in Global Edge looking at the measures taken in terms of the NIE numbers in Spain. As you will have seen from my previous posts I believe this to be a hugely retrograde step. There is a general unanimity from estate agents and lawyers in Spain about this problem. Take a look at the Global Edge article and decide for yourself. Increasing the number of hoops you have to jump through makes no sense at all.

Update: We had it confirmed yesterday that the lawyer can still pick up the NIE once applied for in person. How do we know? He went to pick one up!

Why Spain doesn't fit the narrative of a spendthrift Mediterranean country.

But the Spanish government then proceeded to run a balanced budget on average - that is to say, its borrowing was zero - every year until the eve of the 2008 financial crisis.

And as Spain's economy grew rapidly, its debt ratio fell to a mere 36% of GDP by 2007. Germany's, by contrast, continued to rise.

So, given this record, why are markets telling us that they fear Spain may not repay its debts, while they think Germany's debts are the safest bet within the eurozone?

The reason is that Spain is facing an impossible economic dilemma.

When Spain joined the euro, interest rates fell to the much lower levels typical in Germany.

While the Spanish government resisted the lure of cheap loans, most ordinary Spaniards did not.

The country experienced a long boom, underpinned by a housing bubble, as Spanish households took on bigger and bigger mortgages.

House prices rose 44% from 2004 to 2008, at the tail end of a housing boom, according to ministry of housing data. Since the bubble burst, they have fallen 17%.

During the boom years, Spaniards earned more and spent more.

That helped to flatter the government's finances. More economic activity means more tax revenues.

But it also helped push Spanish wages up to uncompetitive levels.

Unit labour costs in Spain - a measure of the cost of employing an average Spaniard - rose 36% from the euro's creation in 1999 until the end of 2008.

A very interesting property in central Valencia for sale. Why is it interesting? Well firstly it has high vaulted ceilings but currently they are painted. They need a good sanding to get the treated wood back. Secondly the living room is a very large open space with great possibilities therefore. Spanish tortilla

Done right, a Spanish omelette is a simple but gorgeous beast. My boyfriend Jon Yeomans, a fellow journo, writes an excellent blog about all things Spanish in the city called Vidalondon.net. Jon lived and worked in Valencia for 2 years, where he was taught the secret of a perfect tortilla. So I asked him to write a guest blog post for Pinch of Salt (which doubled as a cunning way of getting him to make a big fat tortilla for lunch). Over to Jon...

How to make a Spanish tortilla

All self-respecting Spaniards know how to make a tortilla de patatas, and they are all connoisseurs of the dish. A good tortilla will be met with a nod of knowing appreciation. The life expectancy of a Spanish tortilla should be very short indeed.

You'll need a good quality non-stick pan, but, crucially, it mustn't be so heavy that you can't perform acrobatics with it later on.

Everyone has their own way of making a Spanish tortilla, naturally enough, but all you need to know is the purist's form, with precisely two ingredients: eggs and potatoes.

Get some nice white, waxy potatoes. Peel them, and slice them into the thinnest possible strips.

Add enough vegetable oil to the pan to almost submerge the potatoes, and put it on a high heat. Once the oil is hot enough, slide in your potato shards and fry them on a medium heat for 4-5 minutes or until they are golden and soft. Don't let them get too brown and burnt. You're making tortilla, not fried potatoes.

While the potatoes are cooking, whisk up your eggs. My Spanish flatmates in Valencia reckoned on a simple formula of one egg per person plus one for luck. Depending on how big you want your tortilla, you may want to chuck in one or two on top of that.

Whisk your eggs in a bowl with a fork, like you're having a w*nk, as my flatmate's one-time, yokel boyfriend described it to me. Some cooking tips really stick in your head, don't they?

Add a little salt to the eggs. Once your potatoes are nice and soft, lift them out of the oil and drop them in the egg mixture.

Drain away most of your oil, leaving just tiny specks in the pan. Put it on a high heat and then pour in your potato-and-egg mixture.

Your tortilla should start to form in the pan. With a wooden spoon, scratch at the bits that don't have any potato in them; this will actually help shape the tortilla, even if it seems like you're tearing holes in the thing.

After a minute or so your tortilla should have a pretty solid skin underneath. Now comes the fun part. Turn the heat down and cover the pan with a plate (a plastic plate will be lighter and may help this next bit).

Hold the pan over the sink, in case it all goes horribly wrong. Place one hand on the middle of the plate. Flip the pan and the plate over. Remove the pan. Your half-fried tortilla should be sitting on the plate (ideally, someone else should shout "olé!" and clap at this point. If no one's around, you can shout it yourself).

Put the pan back on a high heat. Slide your tortilla back into the pan and fry the underside. Press down on it with a wooden spoon to get a nice golden colour.

After a minute or so your tortilla will be done. If you're feeling cocky, you can flip it again and serve it with first side you fried pointing up. If you don't want to tempt fate, just slide the tortilla out of the pan onto a fresh plate.

Serve with mayonnaise and a bit of guilt-assuaging salad.

Of course, like any omelette, the recipe can of be adapted to include garlic, onion, peppers, cheese, chorizo - anything you like. I once had an excellent potato and apple tortilla at a vegetarian restaurant in Valencia. But for some Spaniards, the only way to make a tortilla is the purist's way.

✚ Using Evernote to Archive Your Entire Social Media Life

I’m hardly the most promiscuous social network user you’ll meet. I have my little outposts where I like to splash around, but I’m not one to go signing up for every new thing that pops up on the Internet. Get off my lawn or whatever.

The places I do frequent, though, all share one common thread: the transient nature of users’ data. If I post something to Twitter, I’ve got about a week before it disappears into the deep black abyss that is Twitter’s unsearchable archive. Sure, I could try Googling for a particular toot and maybe I’ll get lucky, but the chances of me finding it are slim.

Other networks like Facebook, Instagram and Foursquare don’t really have this problem, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t take precautions incase the same situation develops.

I’ve created and maintain an exhaustive (well, as of a few weeks ago) archive of all almost all of the crap I post on the Internet. You should, too. Here’s the skinny.

Not too long ago, an enterprising young developer created a tool called ifttt.com (short for “If this, then that”). The basic idea is that whenever something happens on one of many web applications that matches your predefined criteria, you can configure ifttt to perform some type of action. For example, whenever I star (or “favorite”) a toot on Twitter, the following action is taken by ifttt:

Yep, it adds a new note in Evernote containing the text of the toot and the URL where it can be accessed later.

Here’s the list of things that I currently use ifttt to archive for me:

Toots (my own)
Favorited Toots (by others)
Foursquare check-ins
Instagram photos
Starred items in Google Reader
Blog posts (both those on nerdgap.com and on my other blog)

And it all goes into a series of Evernote notebooks I’ve created especially for this little task, which all live in a notebook stack called “Social Archive”. It’s totally a “set it and forget it” way to save all of the useless drivel I vomit onto the Internet without any muss or even any fuss.

As an example, let’s do a quick how-to for archiving all of your toots.

First, if you don’t already have one, create an account at ifttt.com. It’s easy and it’s free.
Second, create an Evernote account (though, if you’re reading this, chances are you’ve already done this).
Last, login to your ifttt account and buckle up.

Visit the ifttt tasks page and click the massive “Create task” button at the top right. Next, you’ll need to click the huge word “this”, which you should. From here, you’ll be asked to choose a channel (which is ifttt’s name for “Internet service”). Find the Twitter logo and click ’er:

If you’ve never used ifttt with Twitter before, you’ll be prompted to activate the channel. Do this.

Next, you’ll be asked to choose your trigger; this is ifttt parlance for “the thing that happens to which you’d like ifttt to react”. Or something. Look for the “New Tweet by You” trigger anc click it:

It’ll then ask if you’d like to include retweets or @replies to the trigger. Personally, I use both, but choose your own adventure here. After checking your preferred boxes, click “Create trigger.”

So far, we’ve told ifttt that we want something to happen whenever we post a new toot to Twitter. Now, we’re going to define exactly what that something is (ifttt calls it the “action channel”). Click the really big “that”.

Now, find the big green Evernote elephant and click it. You’ll then be given a set of options for which type of Evernote magic you want to happen when you post something to Twitter. Click “Create a note.”

This is where you get to spread your creative wings, young grasshopper. Using the four fields before you (Title, Body, Notebook and Tags), you can decide exactly how this data is going to look once it hits your Evernote account. Do this however you like, but mine looks like this:

Pretty straightforward; it allows me to search for a particular toot using the intitle: operator in Evernote search (if you have no idea what this means, have I got the thing for you, Peggy Sue). Using the {{foo}} embedding syntax described in the example, though, you can piece together exactly how the stuff will look in real life. Oh, and you can always come back and change these if you decide you hate it later.

Click the big blue button at the bottom and—that’s right—pour the gin because you’re done.

I’ve replicated this process for each of the services I mentioned earlier such that they all feed their content directly into Evernote. This way, I have access to everything I’ve posted online (with the source URL, so I can revisit the original later, if I so choose). It works like a well-fed Siberian Husky and I really, really wish I could give them some money for this.

You may have noticed the metric crapton of channels available to you (Facebook, RSS, Email, Instagram, Delicious, and others). This little ifttt.com thing is an incredibly powerful tool that can do way, way more than what I’ve described here. I encourage you to poke around and figure out your own cool uses for this, or browse the Recipes page for inspiration.

NB: If you’re new to Evernote and you want to start using it better, you might want to take a gander at this thing I wrote. It’s helped thousands of people become competent Evernote users in an afternoon.

After reading all about the UK citizenship test, and also having failed it miserably, I feel that it is time that Spain also had a pointless piece of bureaucracy as we don’t have nearly enough red tape here at the moment and we need to create jobs by making people fill in pointless tests. Here is the link to the response to the test by all of those who failed it.

Therefore when you are thinking about coming to live in Spain you should be studying hard so you can pass the unofficial Spanish Citizenship Test.

Here are the first ten questions and I will leave you to add in the rest

1) When going into a shop or bank with a few people already there, what do you do?

a) Stand in an orderly queue leaving equal spaces between everyone in the queue avoiding eye contact or physical proximity?

b) Mutter “Who’s Last” and then mooch against the nearest wall?

c) Muter “Who’s last?” then proceed to get out your Smartphone and play Angry Birds whilst the person at the front of the queue tells their life story to their cousin who is serving them?

2) When trying to get anything official done how much time should you allow yourself?

a) Half an hour as all you need is a piece of paper to be stamped?

b) All morning and leave a few mornings free in the following week as there will obviously be something else to do and somewhere else to go first before you get what you want done?

c) There is no limit. You will very quickly lose the will to live.

3) When you sit down in a cafe how long should you expect to be sat there before the waiter/waitress comes to take an order?

a) A few minutes?

b) A good half hour?

c) Forever if you do not actually catch their eye and shout “Oye!” or “Oiga!” a few times?

4) What is it obligatory to take to a football match?

a) A white handkerchief?

b) A Bocadillo?

c) A pack of “Pipas”?

d) All of the above?

(If you answered D for a bonus point what are they for?)

5) Which way did the reconquest of Spain from the Moorish invaders go?

a) North to South?

b) South to North? (An answer specially tailored to Valencians)

c) Spain was never reconquered it is still Al Andalus?

6) Who is the current and future head of Government in Spain?

a) Mr Bean and Mr Charisma (“But I Cannot Read My Own Handwriting”)?

b) Zapatero and Rajoy?

c) Both of the above?

7) How much is speeding fine in Spain?

a) Spain has fines?

b) Depends on the speed?

c) Depends on your nationality, and whether it is before lunch for the Guardia who has stopped you and if he is a bit short that day?

Where is the “Real Spain”?

a) Anywhere from 5km inland around the whole country?

b) There isn’t a real Spain, it is a myth peddled by writers trying to emulate the success of “A Year in Provence” for France?

c) Wherever you get to see a donkey on a regular basis?

9) If you go to talk to any politician in Spain how do you know whether he or she is corrupt?

a) There are no corrupt politicians in Spain how dare you suggest such a thing?

b) On a scale of one to ten “Ours’ go up to 11″?

c) Is he or she breathing? Yep! They are corrupt then!

10) Where is the best Spanish food to be found?

a) Wherever the person you are talking to is from?

b) I prefer fish and chips?

c) I have never tried that foreign muck?

MAGNIFICENT GANDIA BEACH

The past week in Spain has seen the wedding of the elderly Duchess of Alba, unemployment in Spain reach a 15 year high and a strike by Spanish teachers. Meanwhile, although the majority of Spaniards are Catholic, 57% (a figure rising annually) do not go to church regularly. Elsewhere, a residential home is being constructed for gay Spaniards and El Hierro in the Canary Islands has just suffered its biggest earthquake (4.3 on the Richter scale) since July – thus getting ever closer to the potential explosion of its volcano.

Of course, the ‘fun’ news has been about the 85 year old Duchess of Alba’s marriage (her third), this time to a civil servant 24 years younger than herself. Whilst this may not be earth shattering news on its own account it has delighted the Spanish who love celebrity gossip – after all Hello magazine came from Spain and Spanish TV is full of seemingly endless programmes about celebrity life.

Well, when it comes to celebrity in Spain, the Duchess of Alba is right up ‘there’, together with being something of an eccentric in her own right. However, what makes her really special is that she is the scion of Spain’s most aristocratic dynasties.

In fact, the Duchess of Alba has more aristocratic titles than anyone else in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records – including being a Duchess 7 times, a Marchioness 17 times and a Countess 23 times. Curiously she is even the Baroness of Bosworth! To cap it all, she is also a Grandee which is the highest aristocratic title in Spain and means that the king addresses her as ‘Cousin’ (Primo). For the likes of you and me (just in case you happen to bump into her), she would expect to be called ‘Most Excellent Lady’ or ‘Your Excellency’.

Predictably, the Duchess of Alba has a personal name to suit her elevated position and this is: Maria del Rosario Cayetana Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Francisca Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva – although how she learnt that as a very small child is mystifying!

Needless to say, the Duchess of Alba has massive wealth and it is said that she could drive from one end of Spain to another without ever leaving her land. This is probably apocryphal but it may reassure you that she is a lady of means, not some impoverished aristocrat with great names and titles – but a bit down on her luck

Less fortunate, of course, are those without jobs in Spain (some 4.2 million). Indeed, unemployment in Spain for September hit a 15 year high for that month – although why anyone is surprised escapes me altogether. The Spanish economy shows no signs of recovery that I have seen and is unlikely to do so (even in terms of sentiment) until the Eurozone crisis is resolved and the General Election in Spain has been decided (20^th November 2011).

Of course, September is always going to be a bad month for data about jobs in Spain because it is the end of the tourist season and many temporary jobs in Spain are lost naturally along with the masses of visitors who come to the country for their summer holidays. Unfortunately, the data for employment in Spain has been exacerbated this year by the national and (finally!) Regional austerity cuts which are now being felt in earnest. Sadly, this is probably the beginning of state job cuts in Spain rather than any end…

During last week the teachers went on strike in Spain, with Madrid being particularly militant (some 60% – 70% went on strike there). The teachers are complaining about the longer working hours that are being imposed upon them and the sacking of substitute teachers. As I have written before, it is a little difficult to feel a great deal of sympathy for teachers and thereby for this strike in Spain. Their working hours are less than onerous; the vast majority have their jobs for life and are far better off than any of the unemployed – and many people in the private sector.

Sadly, when it comes to property in Spain the news, overall, remains gloomy. The number of mortgages in Spain set up in June was an incredible 42.4% lower than for the same month in Spain last year (2010) and Spanish house sales in Q1 were 40.8% lower than for Q1 in 2010. Some recovery on this was made in Q2 but the 2011 results are not looking too good.

The big hope from the government is that the drop from 6% to 4% on the purchase tax of new properties will help to revitalise sales of new Spanish property. Frankly, it is open to question whether this will make any significant difference and I would contend that purchase tax in Spain should also have been dropped on re-sale properties as well.

Meanwhile, it was reported today that Santander are going to place some 29,000 Spanish properties onto the Spanish property market this week. This is a significant amount and will do little to secure the prices of other houses for sale in Spain.

On the face of it, of course, the 29,000 properties from Santander appear like good news for buyers! However, as I have written before (and see this article by Graham Hunt), you need to be careful when buying a Spanish property from a Spanish bank. Everything is not always quite as it seems and the words ‘bank repossession’ do not, by any means, always equate to ‘bargain’.

On social matters, the myth that Spain is a bulwark of Catholicism is being confirmed. Although the vast majority of Spaniards (73%) are Catholic, the vast majority of them do not go to church regularly, according to the Centre for Sociological Investigations (CIS). Indeed, fewer than 16% claim to go to Mass every week, knowledge of which would have General Franco ‘rolling in his grave’. In his day, regular church going was close to being mandatory. In fact, Franco would probably be appalled by the fact that Spain, to its credit, is now one of the most liberal states in the world.

No doubt General Franco would be even more distressed to learn that there are now plans afoot to build, on the outskirts of Madrid, the country’s first gay and lesbian retirement home. This sounds like a good idea and a sound business prospect. I am only a little surprised it has not been done before…

Therefore he has come up with a novel idea for selling his property in Serra, novel for this area of Spain anyway. He is placing a minimum price on the property and inviting offers on it. The best offer taken by the 17th of October will get the property, as long as the buyer is able to complete very quickly after that date ie nobody who needs to sell their place beforehand or who is saying "if" I get a mortgage.
